Plot Summary
The film begins in 1946, when Lady Mary Craven visits an American orphanage and tells the children about an exchange program that will allow one child to travel to England and stay at Misselthwaite Manor. She meets Lizzie Buscana, a spirited girl who loves gardening and takes care of her mother's rose bush. Lady Mary tells Lizzie about the secret garden, where she once played as a child with her cousin Colin Craven and their friend Dickon Sowerby. Lizzie agrees to participate in the exchange program so she can see the garden for herself.
Lizzie arrives in England and is greeted by Martha Sowerby, who runs Misselthwaite Manor with her husband Will Weatherstaff. Lizzie quickly learns that the manor is now an orphanage for children whose parents died in World War II, and that the children are only allowed to visit the garden on Sundays after church. She also meets Sir Colin Craven, who is now married to Lady Mary and is a famous doctor. He is kind but busy, and rarely spends time with his daughter Penelope, who is spoiled and lonely.
Lizzie makes friends with Geraldine, Steven, and Robert, three orphans who share her curiosity and love for nature. She sneaks out at night and finds the key to the secret garden, which Martha had given to her. She enters the garden and is amazed by its beauty and magic. She decides to help it grow and bloom again, as it had been neglected for years. She also meets a friendly hedgehog named Toby, who becomes her companion.
However, not everyone is happy with Lizzie's presence at the manor. Geraldine becomes jealous of Lizzie's attention from Martha and Sir Colin, and persuades Steven to steal the key to the garden. Robert resents Lizzie for being an American and blames her for his parents' death in the war. Penelope feels threatened by Lizzie's friendship with her father and tries to sabotage her efforts in the garden. Dr. Snodgrass, a greedy scientist who works for Sir Colin, wants to use the garden's magic for his own experiments.
Lizzie faces many challenges and dangers as she tries to protect the garden and its secrets from those who want to harm it. She also learns more about herself and her past, as well as the history of the garden and its previous owners. She realizes that she has a special connection to the garden, and that it has chosen her as its new caretaker. She also discovers that she has a hidden talent for music, which she shares with Sir Colin.
In the end, Lizzie manages to save the garden from Dr. Snodgrass's evil plans, with the help of Toby, Robert, Steven, Geraldine, Penelope, Martha, Will, Lady Mary, and Sir Colin. She also reunites with her long-lost grandfather, who had been looking for her since her mother's death. She decides to stay at Misselthwaite Manor with her new family and friends, and to continue caring for the secret garden, which has brought joy and healing to everyone.
